A GUIDE ON HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR OPAL JEWELLERY

Opals are some of the most mesmerising gemstones, shifting in colour and depth like they have captured lightning. One of the most famous opal mining spots in Australia is actually called "Lightning Ridge" - it is where black opal and other delightful stones are mined.

The unique composition of opal makes them truly one-of-a-kind—but also means they require a little extra care to keep them looking their best. Here’s how to ensure your opal jewellery remains as radiant as the day you first wore it.

Understanding Opals: Hardness & Water Content

Unlike many other gemstones, opals contain a significant amount of water—usually between 5% and 10%—which contributes to their captivating play-of-colour. However, this also makes them much more delicate than gems like diamonds or sapphires.

Opals rank between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, diamonds for example are 10 and sapphires are 9 so this means this means that opals are substantially softer than many other popular gemstones. They can be easily scratched by harder materials, making mindful wear and storage essential.

When and Where to Wear Your Opal Jewellery

To ensure longevity, consider these do’s and don’ts when wearing your opals:

When to Wear Opals

  • Special occasions or events where minimal physical activity is required.

  • You can wear your opal everyday, provided you're mindful of how you use your hands (for rings) or where your necklace sits.

When to Avoid Wearing Opals:

  • During rigorous activities: Avoid wearing opal rings or bracelets when exercising, gardening, or doing housework, as they can be easily scratched or knocked.

  • In extreme temperatures: Opals can be sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Exposure to excessive heat or very dry conditions can cause them to lose moisture, leading to cracks or 'crazing.'

  • In water for extended periods: Unlike other gemstones, opals shouldn’t be submerged in water for long periods. While washing your hands with an opal ring is generally fine, do not prolong exposure to water and take your jewellery off before showering or swimming.

  • Near harsh chemicals: Perfumes, household cleaners, and lotions can dull the surface of your opal over time. It’s always best to apply these products before putting on your jewellery.

How Best to Clean & Store Your Opal Jewellery

  • Store separately: Keep your opals in a soft jewellery pouch or a fabric-lined box to prevent scratches from harder gemstones. Your AOK jewellery will arrive in a soft velvet pouch you can use to store your piece separately.

  • Avoid prolonged dryness: If storing opals for a long period, keeping them in a slightly humid environment can help maintain their moisture content.

  • Gentle cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to clean your opals. Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners, as they can damage the stone.

Keeping Your Opal Safe: Necklace Chains

One of the best ways to keep your opal jewellery secure is by choosing the right necklace chain to store your ring on when you can't wear it on your hands. Delicate opals need sturdy yet elegant chains that provide both protection and style. We can recommend a range of solid gold or sterling silver chains to accompany your jewellery simply get in touch with Annie to find out more.
